USHIKUBITSUMUGI

Hakusan Nature and Ushikubi Tsumugi The towering Hakusan Mountains, which stretch across Ishikawa, Fukui, and Gifu prefectures, have long been revered as mountains of faith, and have provided the local people with many blessings of nature, including Ushikubi Tsumugi. Shiramine, Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, where Ushikubi Tsumugi is produced, is located at the trailhead of Mt. Hakusan. Shiramine is a heavy snowfall zone with snowfall of 3 to 4 meters, and women earn their livelihood by spinning thread and weaving cloth during the long winter closed by snow. At that time, the fabric woven mainly from the ``tama cocoon'' that two silkworms jointly made one cocoon is ``Ushikubi Tsumugi''.
Hakusan has been revered as an object of faith for its water of life. Ushikubi Tsumugi, which has been handed down from generation to generation in the region, has a charm different from other Tsumugi. Hakusan and Tedori River have been officially recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark for the purpose of protecting and utilizing the earth's heritage.
